vehicle fuel economy

How much fuel economy is essential for a new car that I will buy in the very near future?
Let’s say hypothetically that I make $100,000 a year and I want a nice vehicle to drive a normal, average number of miles…maybe a thousand or so miles a month. I can afford to buy gas, but I don’t want to be unkind to the environment.
So what’s the cut-off for city mileage that I should require from my new car? 15 MPG? 18? 20? 25? 28?
City mileage? 18-20, even less if you want a sports car. If you are just buying a car for back and forth to work, then find one that’s at least 25 city.
